A set of racing silks and a personal archive relating to Mr John Ismay of the White Star Line (Titanic) Family and owner of the champion racehorse Santa Claus,the racing silks with a green cap bearing a label for L J Watkins, 77/78 Dame Street, Dublin, the black jacket with a gold six-pointed star, and green hooped sleeves; sold together with a leather trunk containing an extensive personal archive mostly relating to Mr John Ismay's extensive business interests, but also his racing and bloodstock activities as well as personal items including his spectacles, (a qty.).Santa Claus was the outstanding racehorse of 1964 winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom and Irish Derby's. The colt had advertised his ability as a two-year-old when winning Ireland's prestigious 2-y-o race the National Stakes by 8 lengths. He was trained at the Curragh Stables of Mick Rogers, having been bought by John Ismay with the advice of Mrs Darby Rogers, Mick's mother.For the avoidance of doubt, this particular set of Mr Ismay's silks is not the one worn during the English and Irish Derby wins as photos show the jacket had a five-pointed star.Santa Claus's victory in the 1964 Derby was the second time that a racehorse owned by the Ismay family had crossed the finishing line first in the Blue Riband of the Turf; the previous time had been in 1913 when the Titanic survivor Charles Bower Ismay's racehorse Craganour won the race. This was one of the famous renewals and became known as the Suffragette Derby, after the Votes for Women campaigner Emily Davison dashed out to her death in front of the King's horse Anmer at Tattneham Corner. In a second twist of high drama Mr Ismay's horse was disqualified by the Epsom Stewards citing inteference with the second-placed horse Aboyeur. This controversial decision is widely regarded to have been a reaction to society criticism of Ismay who had boarded one of the insufficient number of Titanic lifeboats. Mud seemingly had stuck to Ismay Family, Charles being the younger brother of J. Bruce Ismay, Managing Director of the White Star Line.

In 1939 they knew Blue Peter was going to win the Derby. My step-mother came from a very Edwardian family and was not the type to place a bet but she persuaded her WRNS friends to back Blue Peter. He won! The Royal Coaches we see for royal occasions were kept in the stables at Crafton during the war. My step mother and her sister would sit in the coaches and wave. I assume only the horses could see them!”.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup won by the Vincent O'Brien trained Cottage Rake in 1948, an 18ct. gold trophy cup, hallmarked Dublin, 1948, being in the form of a scale replica of the original 1924 Cheltenham Gold Cup trophy created by Solomon Blanckensee & Sons and commissioned by Simmons of Chesterfield, the cup with horse head handles, the body inscribed THE CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP, REPLICA, WON BY, “COTTAGE RAKE”, 4th MARCH 1948, TRAINED BY, M. For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Carnegie was a bay colt foaled in 1991 by Sadler’s Wells out of Detroit (Riverman). He was bred at the Swettenham Stud, owned by HE Sheikh Mohammed and trained in France by Andre Fabre. The colt won 7 of his 13 races. The colt’s most notable victory was in the 1994 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and in 1995 he achieved a further G1 success in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.This shoe was worn when Carnegie finished 3rd in the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Belmont Park behind Northern Spur and Freedom Cry.At stud Darley used Carnegie as a shuttle stallion and the biggest successes came in the southern hemisphere. His most notable progeny was perhaps the racemare Tuesday Joy who won four G1 races in Australia and nearly £1.3 million in prize money.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144. Provenance: The Ray Goddard Collection (lots *** to ***). This shoe was sent to Ray Goddard by Aggressor's trainer J.M. "Towser" Gosden.Aggressor was a bay colt foaled in 1955 by Combat out of Phaetonia (Nearco). He was bred at the Someries Stud in Newmarket, owned by Sir Harold Wernher and trained at Lewes by Towser Gosden. The colt won 11 of his 20 races. Aggressor’s most notable victory was in the 1960 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. The shoe being offered here was worn by the colt in the race. Other major victories included the Solario, Doonside Cup, Cumberland Lodge, Hardwicke and John Porter.At stud his most notable progeny was the filly Dibidale who won both the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks. She was an unlucky loser in the Oaks at Epsom when the saddle slipped in the closing stages.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Arazi was a chestnut colt foaled in 1989 by Blushing Groom out of Danseur Fabuleux (Northern Dancer). He was bred in the USA by Ralph Wilson, founder and owner of the Buffalo Bills NFL team. The colt was originally owned by Allen E Paulson, who sent him to France to be trained by Francois Boutin. Later Sheikh Mohammed bought a half-share.Arazi was one of the outstanding two-year-olds in racing history. He won six of his seven races in France before travelling to Churchill Downs to run on Dirt for the first time in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Here, Arazi recorded an outstanding victory winning by a wide margin in what commentators described as “the single-most spectacular performance in Breeders’ Cup history.” Timeform awarded Arazi a figure of 135, a range of figure usually only reserved for a racehorse at three or above, and the colt was festooned with accolades at the Eclipse and Cartier awards ceremonies.Sadly Arazi, although winning further races, did not reach the same dizzy heights as a three-year-old and was retired to Stud where he was owned outright by Sheikh Mohammed. Arazi’s greatest influence on the breed can perhaps be found as a broodmare sire - his daughters producing around the globe the likes of Electrocutionist (Dubai World Cup), Lahudood (Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare) and American (Melbourne Cup).

He was owned by Stavros Niarchos and trained in France by Francois Boutin.Machiavellian won four of his seven career starts including two G1 races, the Prix Morny and the Prix De La Salamandre. The colt started favourite for the 1990 2,000 Guineas but was beaten by the Richard Hannon-trained Tirol.He was retired to the Dalham Hall Stud where he enjoyed plenty of success, siring amongst many others the Dubai World Cup winners Street Cry and Almutawakel; and for Cheveley Park Medicean, winner of the Lockinge, Queen Anne & Eclipse.

He was owned by Antonio Balzarini who shipped the colt to Newmarket to be trained by Michael Jarvis.Bob Back recorded six career victories including the Premio Tevere, the Select Stakes, the Premio Presidente della Repubblica and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.At stud Bob Back produced the St Leger winner Bob’s Return but became a bigger influence as a NH stallion. Famous progeny would include Bobs Worth, Back In Front, Bacchanal and many others.

She was bred at the Highclere Stud, owned by the Earl of Carnarvon and trained by Richard Hannon Sr.Niche recorded six career victories including the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Lowther Stakes, the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Falmouth Stakes. In the 1984 1000 Guineas the filly finished a 1/2L second to Sayyedati.Tragically Niche met with an untimely death at home when in training for the Prix Jacques Le Marois.

He was owned bred & owned by HH The Aga Khan and trained in France by Alain de Royer-Dupre.The colt was only defeated once in a seven-race career and was the top-rated French horse as a juvenile and as a three-year-old. His most important victory was in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby). Having won the Prix Niel all seemed set for the Arc, but he was withdrawn from the race and retired to stud, where he proved generally disappointing.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Stilvi was a British-bred bay filly foaled in 1969 by Derring-Do out of Djerella (Guersant). She was owned by George Cambanis and trained by Bruce Hobbs close to the site of the Graham Budd auction venue and National Horseracing Museum at the Palace House Stables, Newmarket.Stilvi was a high-quality sprinter who won the Duke of York Stakes and the King George Stakes at Royal Ascot.However, the racing achievements were eclipsed by her importance as a broodmare. Stilvi was the dam of Tachypous (Middle Park), Tromos (Dewhurst), Tolmi (Coronation Stakes) and Tyrnavos (Irish Derby). As is evident from the farrier's specially shoe being offered here, in later life the mare suffered from laminitis.

As a 3-y-o Lycius finished 2nd in three G1 races the 2,000 Guineas, the July Cup and the Prix Jacques Le Marois.Lycius firstly stood at Stud in Ireland and latterly in the USA and achieved modest successes.

Singspiel was campaigned as a globetotter winning the Dubai World Cup, the Japan Cup and the Canadian International; as well as on home soil recording wins in the International at York, the Coronation Cup and other races.At stud Singspiel sired many good horses including Moon Ballad who, like his father, won a Dubai World Cup, and Papineau who won the Gold Cup at Ascot. In more recent times Da Rei Mi has proved an important racehorse and stallion; and the French-trained grey gelding Solow was very high-class.

His exceptional progeny, too numerous to mention, would include Mark Of Esteem, Dalakhani, Kotashaan, Hellenic. Key Change, Mutamam and Necklace.Worthy of mention is his influence as a damsire. His daughters’ progeny include High Chaparral, Marienbard, Enzeli, Islington, Edabiya, Alexander Goldrun, Darsi, AL Kazeem, Estimate and many other high-class performers.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Monaassib was a British-bred brown gelding foaled in 1991 by Cadeaux Genereux out of Pluvial (Habat).The sprinter was owned by Maktoum Al Maktoum and was with Ed Dunlop during his first year as a trainer at Newmarket in 1994. Unraced as a 2-y-o, Monaassib would eventually run in 36 races, winning ten times and being placed on a further ten occasions. The gelding won twice at G3 level, and twice in Listed races as well as being placed in G1 and G2 events.

He was owned by Sheikh Mohammed and trained in France by Andre Fabre.As a 2-y-o the colt won twice at G1 level in the Prix De La Salamandre and the Dewhurst Stakes, and at Newmarket in 1995 won the 2,000 Guineas to remain unbeaten in six races. Unfortunately, Pennekamp picked up a leg injury in the Derby where he started as a short-priced favourite and was unable to race again.At stud his best performer was probably under National Hunt Rules with Penzance who won the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

He was bred by Juddmonte and raced in the colours of Prince Khalid Abdullah and trained in France by Andre Gabre.The colt was crowned Champion European Two-Year-Old following victories in the Prix Morny, Prix de la Salamandre and Dewhurst Stakes. Despite a shock defeat at odds of 1-10 on his 3-y-o reappearance, Zafonic won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in great style and broke the course record, a time that had stood for 45 years. Very unfortunately the colt broke a blood vessel in the Sussex Stakes and was retired to stud.His most famous of his progeny include Xaar, Count Dubois, Zafeen, Iffraajand Trade Fair.

Six other career victories included the Beeswing Stakes.After his race career he was exported to the Summerhill Stud in South Africa to take up stallion duties.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Music Boy was a British-bred chestnut colt foaled in 1975 by Jukebox out of Veronique (Matador).Music Boy would become the Cheveley Park Stud’s first Group winner (Gimcrack Stakes), trained by ‘Snowy’ Wainwright; and their first stallion, proving the Leading First-Season Sire in 1980. For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Soviet Star was an American-bred bay colt foaled in 1984 by Nureyev out of Veruschka (Venture). He was owned by Sheikh Mohammed and trained in France by Andre Fabre.The colt was an outstanding sprinter and miler, winning at the highest level in the July Cup, the French 2,000 Guineas and the Sussex Stakes, amongst five other career victories.A successful stud career produced the likes of Starcraft, Starborough, Ashkalani and Soviet Line.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Fantastic Light was a US-bred bay colt foaled in 1996 by Rahy out of Jood (Nijinsky. Until early 2000 he was owned by Maktoum Al Maktoum and trained at Newmarket by Sir Michael Stoute. He then transferred to Godolphin to be trained by Saeed bin Suroor.When in the former ownership, the colt won the Sandown Classic Trial, the Great Voltigeur Stakes and the Arc Trial at Newbury in 1999; and the Dubai Sheema Classic in 2000. The first successes for new connections came later that year, and at the highest grade, with victories in the Man o’War Stakes and Hong Kong Cup. Fantastic Light improved more as a 5-y-o and in a memorable campaign won the Tattersalls Gold Cup, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Turf (setting a new course record). Of these victories, the Irish Champion Stakes is of worth mention. Fantastic Light’s narrow defeat of the great Galileo was a supreme clash of two alpha male thoroughbreds not conceding an inch to their rival; whilst the Godolphin v Coolmore race tactics added a further fascination to one of the most memorable races of the 21st Century.At Stud, the best of his progeny would include Scintillo (Gran Criterium) and, in Australia, Mission Critical (Whakanui Stud International Stakes).
