In 1993 he completed the English and Irish Derby double. This year Auguste Rodin became the 19th racehorse to complete the Derby double.This was Pat Eddery's fourth and final win in the Irish Derby. The winning jockey’s trophy presented to Pat Eddery for the victory on El Gran Senor in the 1984 Irish Derby,In the form of a crystal decanter & stopper, inscribed with race details, height 32cm., fine, original condition.El Gran Senor was an American-bred bay colt (1981) by Northern Dancer out of Sex Appeal (Buckpasser). He was owned by Mr Robert Sangster and trained in Ireland by Vincent O'Brien. The colt was outstanding in what was a truly vintage crop of 1981 foals, including Sadler's Wells, Chief Singer, Darshaan, Rainbow Quest, Laskkari, Pebbles, Commanche Run, Secreto and Northern Trick. El Gran Senor was Timeform's top horse at two and at three when he won the 2,000 Guineas and the Irish Derby. He later had success as a stallion, his best progeny including Rodrigo de Triano and Belmez.This was Pat Eddery's second of four winners in the Irish Derby, his others being Grundy, Law Society and Commander In Chief.Provenance: From the Pat Eddery Collection (lots 179 to 195).

The Trusthouse Forte race sponsor’s trophy to the winning jockey Pat Eddery for the victory on Dancing Brave in the 1986 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp,in the form of a silver salver by Asprey of London, inscribed PRESENTED BY TRUSTHOUSE FORTE, PRIX DE L’ARC DE TRIOMPHE, 1986, diameter 23cm.Dancing Brave was an American-bred bay colt (1983) by Lyphard out of Navajo Princess (Drone). He was owned by K Abdullah and trained at Pulborough by Guy Harwood.Dancing Brave was the outstanding European racehorse of 1986.The win in the Arc was his fourth G1 victory, having previously won the 2,000 Guineas, the Eclipse Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. In the Derby he was ridden by Greville Starkey who was widely criticised for his ride when beaten 1/2L by Shahrastani. Largely through his successes on Dancing Brave, Pat Eddery was appointed retained jockey for Khaled Abdullah. By Timeform ratings, Dancing Brave (140) was the best horse Pat Eddery rode in his illustrious career. At Stud Dancing Brave sired the 1993 Derby winner Commander In Chief.Pat Eddery won four Arcs. A privately commissioned head & shoulders bronze of the racehorse Shergar by David Wynne (British, 1926-2014) presented by HH The Aga Khan to Cliff Lines the colt's work rider at Michael Stoute's Newmarket stables,signed, dated ‘81 and numbered 5/8, modelled with the horse’s famous characteristic in running of his tongue lolling out, mounted on a gently angled black marble plinth, set with a brass plaque inscribed TO CLIFF LINES WITH APPRECIATION FROM THE AGA KHAN, FROM THE AGA KHAN, SHERGAR, WINNER OF THE ENGLISH DERBY, IRISH DERBY AND KING GEORGE AND QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES, 1981, height 31cm., width 32cm.Provenance: The Cliff Lines Collection (lots 196 to 202).Knowing nothing about horse racing or even how to ride, Cliff Lines, ‘Cockney Cliff’ as he was known, started his career as a 14-year-old apprentice to Noel Murless. When trying to make his way as jockey he rode a winner for The Queen, before becoming a work rider for the Michael Stoute stable, graduating to Head Lad. He later worked in pre-training before taking out a training licence of his own. Cliff worked for 70 years in racing and worked with top class horses riding them out daily including The Aga Khan's legendary racehorse Shergar; as well Royal Palace, Hethersett, Jo Tobin, Sonic Lady, Pilsudski, Shareef Dancer and Fujiyama Crest, the last named being Frankie Dettori's final win during the Magnificent Seven at Ascot. Cliff Lines retired from racing in 2019 just before his 84th birthday.

The British Horseracing Authority Sale of Racing Colours: BROWN with YELLOW seams, BLACK cap.What is being offered here is the opportunity to register a BHA standard set of racing colours. These are similar to colours that were one of the historic seventeen original sets of racing colours recorded in the Jockey Club Resolution of October 1762, those of the Hon. Francis Greville, later 1st Earl of Warwick (see lot images).The 1762 resolution stated: “For the greater convenience of distinguishing the horses in running, and also for the prevention of disputes arising from not knowing the colours of each rider, the under-mentioned gentlemen have come to the resolution and agreement of having the colours annexed to the following names worn by their respective riders.”The Greville colours were recorded as brown trimmed with yellow. An example of colours described in this era as ‘trimmed’ are illustrated in a painting depicting HRH The Prince of Wales's (later King George IV) famous horse Escape (see lot images). The trophy for the 1830 Richmond Cup won by Lord Milton’s racehorse Medoro, in the form of a William IV silver-gilt cup and cover, maker's mark of Joseph Angell, London, 1827, campana-shaped and on spreading circular foot chased with flutes and a band of acanthus foliage, the lower part of the body applied with acanthus foliage and acorns and with two reeded acanthus leaf-capped scroll handles, the everted rim with alternating acanthus and lobed decoration, the body applied with a race scene, the detachable facetted cover chased with panels of flowers and foliage on a matted ground and with detachable horse and jockey finial, with beaded borders, the body engraved with inscription RICHMOND RACES, 1830, LORD KELBURNE, HONrble COL L. ARDEN, hallmarked on body, cover and finial, fine condition, 44cm. high, 3,811gr.Provenance: Won by Medoro for Charles, Lord Milton (d.1857), later 5th Earl Fitzwilliam and by descent.Christie’s Wentworth Woodhouse Sale. 8 July 1998, Lot 16.The race was won by Medoro by Levantes out of Marianne by Sorcerer, a bay colt foaled in 1824. He had also won the Richmond Cup the year before and four races in 1827, two races in 1828 and 3½ in 1829 (The Doncaster Stakes in 1829 had been a dead heat). He retired to stud and lived to 19 years of age when he was destroyed, having broken his thigh bone.Richmond Racecourse in North Yorkshire staged its first fixture in 1765, firstly on the High Moor before relocating to the Low Moor. Its final meeting was held in 1891, the Jockey Club decreeing that a bend on the course was too tight and dangerous for thoroughbreds. The racecourse grandstand is still extant and has been given Grade II Listed Status. Gallops are still used in Richmond today for training racehorses, the Green Oaks stables of Philip Kirby being located there.The running of the Richmond Cup endured for just over a century between 1757 and 1858 and a new Cup was produced every year.Charles William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam was born 4th May 1786. Before inheriting the Earldom on the death of his father (the 4th Earl) in 1833 he was given the courtesy title of Viscount Milton. The Fitwilliam Family Seat was at Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire and reputed to be the largest private residence in England. The 4th Earl had inherited the estate from his uncle the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham and Prime Minister who had died without a direct male heir in 1782.The Marquis of Rockingham won the very first running of the St Leger with his filly Allabaculia in 1776; and the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam continued the family tradition with victories in 1789 (Pewett), 1802 (Orville) and 1807 (Paulina). The 5th Earl, and winning owner of the present trophy, withdrew from racing interests in the 1830s and in particular after Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 who held little enthusiasm for the Sport of Kings.The Richmond Races Stewards:James Boyle-Carr, Viscount Kelburne, (d.1869), later 5th Earl of Glasgow was the second son of George, 4th Earl of Glasgow (d.1843) and his wife Augusta (d.1822), daughter of James, 15th Earl of Erroll (d.1778). He married Georgina Ann (d.1895), daughter of Edward Hay Mackenzie Esq., of New Hall and Cromarty. He had assumed the additional name of Carr on the death of his mother in 1822. She was the granddaughter and heiress of Sir William Carr of Etal, Northumberland.The Honourable Colonel William Pepper Arden (d.1857), later 3rd and last Baron Alvanley, was the son of Richard Pepper, 1st Baron Arden (d.1804) and his wife Anne-Dorothea (d.1825), eldest daughter of Richard Wilbraham Bootle Esq. He married Arabella, daughter of William, 1st Duke of Cleveland (d.1842) in 1831, however the marriage was childless and on his death in 1857 the title became extinct.

A magnificent Victorian silver sculptural trophy for the 1875 Chesterfield Cup at Goodwood won by Sir Anthony de Rothschild’s racehorse Coomassie, hallmarked Emanuel Emanuel, Old Bond Street, London, 1874, modelled by the sculptor H. Owen-Hale, formed as a cast sculptural group with a ferocious depiction of fallen warriors and two knights in horseback combat during the defeat of the Saxons by King Arthur at the Battle of Mount Badon (late 5th/early 6th century), seemingly inspired by the engraving “Defeat of the Saxons by Arthur” by Charles William Sheeres (fl. 1851-1868) published in Cassel’s Illustrated History of England, Vol.1, illustration, p.25, published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London, Paris & New York, 1865, with shaped oblong ebonised wood base with curved ends, the sides applied with two silver plaques, one depicting the Landing of the Saxons in Britain, the other with the treacherous slaughter of the Britons by order of Hengist, the ends each applied with a shield and spears roundel, one inscribed GOODWOOD 1875, the other WON BY COOMASSIE, one of the fighting knights lacking the head of his battle axe, otherwise in fine condition, 72cm. high, 10,285gr.Provenance: Christie’s 23rd June 1999 lot 59.Goodwood House was purchased by the first Duke or Richmond in 1697. The races on top of the downs were introduced by the third Duke of Richmond and have been an annual event since 1801, public from the year after. The main meeting that has become known as Glorious Goodwood was and is still held over five days in the last week of July. The oldest race at the meeting, the Goodwood Cup, has been held since 1812, while the Stewards' Cup was first run in 1840 and the Sussex Stake the year after.The trophy being offered here is for the Chesterfield Cup, named after George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield and was first run under this title in 1841, although the race can be traced slightly earlier to 1839 when it was run as the Harkaway Cup. As the magnificence of the trophy would suggest it was a very prestigious race at Goodwood at this time. It is still run for today but over the years has been downgraded in importance and become a handicap race, albeit a valuable one - this year’s race sponsored by Coral was worth over £50,000 to the winner.In 1875 the Chesterfield Cup was won by the three-year-old bay filly Coomassie owned by Sir Anthony de Rothschild, 1st Baronet (1810-1876), who had also bred her at the Aston Clinton estate in Buckinghamshire. Coomassie was to win the Chesterfield Cup again the following year, although sadly not witnessed by Sir Anthony who had died in the January.The sculptor of the trophy H. Owen-Hale later worked for Copeland producing high quality work in the company’s range of Parian Ware, simulating classical marble sculpture in porcelain. He is also remembered for his public sculpture, a memorial bust in marble & granite of the architect Edward Pugin erected in Ramsgate in 1879 and can still be enjoyed today opposite the old Granville Hotel and close to the Granville Theatre.The magnificent horse racing trophies of the Victorian period offered at Goodwood, Ascot and elsewhere invariably had a strong equestrian theme but rarely in a sporting context. Instead, designers took influence from historical events or imagery romanticised through literature and the arts in general. For many years the Illustrated London News published articles and engravings of these sumptuous trophies. Indeed, the present Chesterfield Cup has a write up in the edition published 31st July 1875, p.23, with the trophy engraved and illustrated.

The Ayr County Cup won by Sir Abe Bailey's racehorse Ceylonese in 1925, a silver two-handled trophy cup & cover, hallmarked Garrard & Co. Ltd., London, 1923, the body with a repeated pattern in raised decoration of Bacchus masks and flower pots, the cover with a similar floral raised pattern, on ebonised plinth set with a plaque inscribed WESTERN MEETING, 1925, AYR COUNTY CUP, WON BY, CEYLONESE, height 40cm., width across handles 36cm., weight 2,950gr., height on base 50cm., dings to cover rim causing fitting to cup misaligned, otherwise in good condition.Ceylonese was a brown colt foaled in 1919 by Willonyx out of Excelita (Dark Ronald), trained by Reg Day at the Terrace House Stables in Newmarket. In 1922 the colt had finished 3rd in the St Leger and also finished third in the Cesarewitchs of 1922 & 1923.Sir Abe Bailey was a South African diamond and gold tycoon, politician, financier and art collector. He also played First-Class cricket for Transvaal and in 1912 played a leading role in instigating a triangular Test Match tournament between England, Australia and South Africa.He also had extensive bloodstock interests in South Africa and England, his horses carrying his familiar gold & black hooped colours. His first major successes came with Dark Ronald (Ceylonese's sire) in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot in 1909. Dark Ronald was also the sire of Son-In-Law who became an important stallion for stamina. Sir Abe Bailey's greatest triumph, however, was the victory in the 1920 Epsom Derby with Spion Kop.

A silver-plated tray presented to the racehorse trainer Matt Peacock by his employees at the Manor House stables, Middleham, on the occasion of his marriage 9th April 1923, the large tray with ornate border and central plaque inscribed "Presented to MD Peacock on the occasion of his marriage from the employees of the Manor House Middleham, April 9th 1923. There are no visible maker stamps and the the tray displays age related marking and patina.Matt Peacock was a renowned trainer responsible for 1945 Derby winner "Dante". The famous Manor House racings stables at Middleham were in family hands for over 100 years, before finally sold after Lennie Peacock's death in 2018.
