Jean Walwyn (British, 1925-2022) Red Berry and Foal, signed and dated 1982, bronze, mid-brown patina, mounted on green marble plinth, overall 28 by 42cm. Red Berry was a daughter of Great Nephew out of a Big Game mare foaled in 1971. She was trained at Lambourn by the sculptress's brother Peter Walwyn. She was a smart two-year-old recording four wins before finishing a creditable second in the Cheveley Park at Newmarket. The filly did not recapture her form as a three-year-old and was retired as a broodmare. Sculptress Jean "Jinnie" Marjorie Walwyn was the sister of Peter Walwyn and a cousin of Fulke Walwyn.

An original London North Eastern Railway sign from the defunct non-passenger station at Newmarket used for handling horse transportation, circa 1950, in blue Perspex with white lettering reading NEWMARKET HIGH LEVEL HORSE OFFICE, then detailing contact information, and the station office's opening hours, some losses to corners and to blue colouring, general wear, but overall good, 91cm. square; sold with a colour postcard by Parr & Son, Newmarket, postmarked 3 Nov 1908 and titled 'New Railway Station', (2).Newmarket Railway Station opened on 4th April 1848 as a terminus by the small branch line Newmarket Railway Company. It was located close to Warren Hill on [Old] Station Road near All Saints Road. The station's terminal was an elaborate piece of architectural opulence described as resembling a "Baroque Orangery." When the line to Ely was opened on 1st September 1879 a new island platform was built. It was at a slightly lower level and located to the east of the original terminus. For some years hence Newmarket was in effect two separate stations, the original High Level used by the Cambridge trains terminating at Newmarket; with the Low Level used by through trains to Ely and later Bury St Edmunds.Newmarket being the HQ of British horse racing meant that the station had to handle near constant inward and outward horse traffic serving the racecourses, major training stables and Tattersalls bloodstock auction house. Around the turn of the 20th century it is estimated that 12,500 horses were being dealt with annually. So on 7th April 1902 a new passenger station was opened about a half mile south at the bottom of The Avenue close to Tattersalls. This lot includes a period postcard published in 1908 portraying the new station. The original station was retained to continue with the non-passenger horse transportation logistics, as well as goods and parcel traffic. There was a a specific office, original home to this sign, for the administration of the horse traffic. Facilities included 25 horse boxes for every day use plus an additional 50 boxes located nearby for busy days such as race meetings and the Tattersalls auctions. Eventually horse transportation by road became the accepted norm and Newmarket Station's Horse Office closed circa 1954, although the station continued to handle goods and freight until 3rd April 1967. The original magnificent terminus architecture survived until 1981 when, despite public outcry and listed status, permission was granted for demolition to make way for the Armstrong Close housing development. The present Newmarket station is in yet another location, a little south from the 1902 site, and the line at this point is now single track and used for services between Cambridge and Ipswich.

Printed racecard for the fifth annual Sheriff Hutton Steeple Chases 2nd April 1867, comprising the 20 Prince of Wales Stakes over three miles, the 10 Princess Alexandra Stakes over two and a half miles and the 5 Ladies' Purse, races held under the Stewardship of Messrs. W Hornsey, R Cayton and W Fawcett, and R Williamson (Castle Inn, Secretary) and R Saville (Wellington Inn, Treasurer), printed by C Lawson, 44 Goodramgate, York, water stain bottom right-hand corner, horizontal fold, otherwise good, mounted, framed & glazed, 34 by 27cm. The Sheriff Hutton Steeplechases comprising of three races were first held in April 1863 and continued for just a short while until 1870. Apart from a point-to-point meeting organised by the Middleton Hunt at Cape Farm in 1921, steeplechasing did not return to Sheriff Hutton until 2008. This was when the veteran racehorse trainer Mick Easterby agreed to host the opening meeting of the Yorkshire point-to-point season at a newly established three mile course on land close to his New House Farm yard. The new course is believed to be laid out very close to the site of the original course on land known as The Carrs.

Scarce racecard for the 1885 Derby at Epsom won by the Fred Archer-ridden Melton,Dorling's List of Epsom Races for the Second Day of the Summer Meeting, Wednesday 3rd June 1885, featuring The Derby and five other races, unfortunately this scarce & historic racecard has an unsightly water stain.This was Fred Archer's fourth of his five Derby wins. Two greyhound race jackets, Jacket 1, Glin Bridge, Ladbroke Golden Jacket 1976, Harringey, 28th February 1976,this race was shown on ITV World of Sport, Glin Bridge won 33 wins from 49 open races, and was 2nd in 10, Archie Newhouse, the former greyhound racing editor of the Sporting Life and famed for his weekly Wednesday column, in ‘My Greyhound World’ - declared: “Glin Bridge was the hottest property in greyhound racing in 1976.”, in February, 1976, "Glin Bridge thrilled millions of armchair viewers on ITV’s ‘World of Sport’ when landing the final of the Ladbroke Golden Jacket (660 metres) in show-stopping style". This is the winners jacket for that race. The jacket is in gold lame with a circular velvet roundel to each side with the Ladbroke logo and other literals embroidered in metal threads. It measure 22in. long including the front straps; Jacket 2, Yankees Shadow, The Regency, Brighton and Hove 1986, The Regency is a category one greyhound race run at this track since 1948, Yankees Shadow was trained by George Curtis, the jacket measure 22in. including the front straps and is in blue velvet with gilt metal edging and gold tassels and yellow lettering, there is a small fingernail sized hole to the centre of jacket, the blue velvet jacket inscribed THE JOHN POWER SHOW DOWN, WEMBLEY 1985, gold fringe, 48 by 46cm., (2).

Set of vintage horse racing equipment circa 1920s,comprising: jockey silks, maroon& gold hoops, black sleeves and two caps, one maroon the other black, the first cap bearing ink initials H N W; together with a racehorse's leather brow band wrapped silks matching the jockey colours; and a pair of riding spurs, with leather straps; the lot also including a few off-cuts of silk, (a lot).The initials H N W are for Henry North Webb, the grandfather of the current vendor. Having served in the Army based in India for 20 years, Henry North Webb returned to England in the early 1920s, living in Dorset.The choice of racing colours may have been influenced by the colours of the famous amateur wanderers cricket club I ZIngari.
