Major Godfrey Douglas Giles (British, 1857-1923),CARICATURE OF THE ROYAL JOCKEY HERBERT JONES DANCING WITH MR SOMERVILLE TATTERSALL’S 1922 PORTLAND PLATE WINNING FILLY ‘TWO STEP’, signed with initials G.D.G. and dated 1922, pen & ink & wash in sepia tones, with speech bubbles containing disapproving remarks from onlooking horses, mounted, framed & glazed, MEASUREMENTS TO COME.Provenance: Formerly owned by the jockey Herbert Jones, sold at Graham Budd Auctions 2nd November 2004 as lot 544.The 1922 Portland Plate winner at Doncaster was Two Step, a three-year-old bay filly by the Irish Derby winner Bachelors Double out of Dancing Dora. She was trained at Manton for ‘Sommy’ Tattersall by Alec Taylor Jnr. Earlier in the season Two Step had won the inaugural running of the Nunthorpe Stakes at York after it had been promoted to a Conditions Race, having started life as a seller in 1903. Later in the autumn the filly also won the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket, run over 6f at this time. The royal jockey Herbert Jones was in the saddle on all three occasions and this caricature was formerly in his personal collection.

Three late Victorian gouache watercolours of horse races by the artist George Finch Mason (1850-1915),each signed by the artist and inscribed ink with titles: i) “Eventail Wins!”, Goodwood, July 28th 1898, The Prince of Wales's Stakes, of 2,200 sovs., 26 by 35.5cm.; ii) Goodwood 1898, The Stewards' Cup, “Altesse Wins!”, also featuring a vignette of the horse being led back into the winner's enclosure; iii) “Sirenia Wins!", Kempton Park, May 12th 1900, The Great Jubilee Handicap, of 2,655 sovs., each visible image 26 by 35.5cm., uniformly mounted, framed & glazed, overall 48 by 58cm., very good condition with vibrant colours, (3).The first listed print depicts the Prince of Wales's horse Eventail winning the race that bore the Prince's titled name. Altesses was owned and trained by James Jewitt. He had also trained the winner the year before with Amphora. The Great Jubilee winning filly had a raced named after her at the scene of her triumph Kempton Park, the Sirenia Stakes. The event was promoted to G3 status in 2003.
