Aston Villa FC 1921-22 autographs,
rare original autographed fold-over card size 8.5 by 5.5in. with typed team grid to the open interior, fully autographed in fountain pen ink to their individual team positions by the great Aston Villa team of 1921-22 that included eight England Internationals as well as seven members of the 1919-20 F.A Cup Final team and eight members of the 1923-24 F.A Cup Final team, eleven original ink signatures including: Tommy Jackson, Tommy Smart, Tommy Weston, Frank Moss, Frank Barson, G. Fred Blackburn, Richard York, Billy Kirton, Ian Dickson, Billy Walker and Arthur Dorrell, very good condition
Aston Villa finished 5th in League Division One in season 1921-22 with a team that including eight England International players: Tommy Smart (20 September 1896 – 10 June 1968) was an English footballer who played as a full-back for Aston Villa. He made five appearances for England at international level between 1921 and 1929. He soon established himself in Villa's first team, and made his debut for the England team against Scotland in 1921. The third of his five appearances, also against Scotland, was in the first match that England played at Wembley Stadium, on 12th April 1924. FA Cup winner 1920 and runner-up 1924. Frank Moss (17 April 1895 – 15 September 1965) was an English professional football wing half who made over 250 appearances in the Football League for Aston Villa. He was capped 5 times by England at international level between 1921 and 1924, and represented the Football League XI. He captained Villa, and was a part of the Villa teams which won the 1919-20 FA Cup and finished runners-up in 1923-24. Frank Barson (10 April 1891 – 13 August 1968) was an English footballer who played for several English football clubs including Barnsley, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Watford. He had a reputation for aggressive play, and is regarded as one of the "hard men" of English football. He transferred to Aston Villa in 1919, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1920, and to Manchester United in 1922, with a transfer fee of £5,000. In 1920, Barson had England trials and it was whilst at Villa Park that he made his one and only international appearance for England on 15 March 1920 against Wales at Highbury. Wales won the game 2–1. George Fredrick Blackburn (3 August 1899 – 7 March 1957) was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England. He made over 250 appearances in the Football League during his career and won one cap for England in May 1924. Blackburn received his first call up to the England national side in April 1924 for a match against Scotland in the 1923-24 British Home Championship, but did not feature for the side. One month later, on 17 May 1924, Blackburn made his one and only appearance for England in a 3–1 victory over France at Stade Pershing. Richard Ernest York (25 April 1899 – 9 December 1969) was an English footballer, who in addition to a long club career with Aston Villa in the Football League appeared twice for England. A winger, he spent 16 years at Villa from 1915 to 1931, and was on the losing team in the 1924 FA Cup Final. He made two appearances for England, both 1–0 defeats to Scotland in April 1922 and April 1926. William John Kirton (2 December 1896 – 1970) was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England, who played over 200 games for Aston Villa and is best known for scoring the only goal in the 1920 FA Cup Final. Kirton won his first and only international cap for England against Northern Ireland on 22nd October 1921. Kirton scored England's only goal in the 1–1 draw. William Henry Walker (29 October 1897 – 28 November 1964) was a prominent English footballer of the 1920s and 1930s. He is considered by many to be the greatest footballer to ever play for Aston Villa Football Club and one of the greatest players to have played for England. As a manager he won the FA Cup with each of Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest some 24 years apart, a record to this day. He made 531 appearances for Villa between 1914 and 1934, scoring 244 goals, of which 214 came in 478 league matches. He remains Aston Villa’s all-time top goal scorer to this day. He was an FA Cup Winner with Villa in 1920, and runner up in 1924. Walker played for England 18 times between 1920 and 1932, scoring 9 goals. Arthur Reginald Dorrell (30 March 1896 – 13 September 1942) was an English international footballer who played on the left-wing. He was the son of former Villa player William Dorrell. He played for Aston Villa between 1919 and 1931, scoring 65 goals in 390 appearances and winning four England caps 1924-25. He played in both the 1920 and 1924 FA Cup finals, the first of which Villa won. Thomas Jackson (16 March 1898 – 1975) was a football player in the early years of professional football in England, who played over 200 games for Aston Villa as a goalkeeper. FA Cup runner-up 1924. Thomas Weston (2 August 1890 – 1952) was a footballer who played in the Football League for Aston Villa and Stoke City. Weston joined Aston Villa in 1911. He soon established himself as first choice full back and earned a reputation as a tough and uncompromising defender. He helped Villa win the FA Cup in 1912-13 and 1919-20. He made 178 appearances for the "Villans" in seven seasons he spent at Villa Park and finished runners-up in the First Division twice in 1912-13 and 1913-14. He left in the summer of 1922 and joined newly promoted Stoke where he only managed to play four matches in 1922-23 before deciding to retire. FA Cup winner 1913 and 1920. Ian William Dickson (September 1902 – 1976) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a forward. He played for Queen of the South, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough. In his first season at Aston Villa, Dickson scored two goals from his eight appearances. It was, however, in the 1921/22 season that Villa Park saw the best of him when he scored 28 goals from his 42 appearances, making him Villa's top scorer that season and helping the team to finish 5th in England's top division.

All glass will be removed from framed and glazed items prior to posting and may result in delays to shipping your items. (This service is included in the cost of postage and packing). We can also totally remove all framing and mounts upon request to reduce shipping costs. Alternatively, lots can be collected in person by prior appointment from NN8 1RT.

3. Conduct of the Auction
The auctioneer will commence the bidding and advance the bidding in such increments as he considers appropriate. The contract between the buyer and the seller is concluded on the striking of the auctioneer's hammer. The auctioneer shall have discretion to refuse bids, withdraw or re-offer for lots for sale (including after the fall of the hammer) if he believes that there may have been an error or dispute, and may also take such other action as he reasonably deems necessary. Title in a lot will not pass to the buyer until Graham Budd Auctions has received the purchase price in cleared funds. Remedies for non-payment are stated in our Conditions of Business which can be viewed in full at our website www.grahambuddauctions.co.uk
4. Pre-Sale Viewing
We are offering pre-sale viewing of lots at our Wellingborough premises.
This is strictly by a pre-arranged timed appointment to be requested by email.
The last opportunity to view lots at our premises is Friday 3rd of March.
5. Condition Reports
Any requests for condition reports or additional photographs must be received by email by Friday 3rd of March.
It is recommended that prospective Bidders inspect the lots on which they intend to bid, we accept bids from potential Buyers on the basis that Buyers (or their advisors) have fully accepted the lot prior to bidding and have satisfied themselves prior to bidding in relation to the condition and accuracy of the description of the lot.
6. Overseas Bidders

8. Bidding
All bidders will be required to register online before the auction commences in order to place a absentee bid or book a telephone line on any lot with the Auction House or bid on the Online Platforms.
A form of government-issued proof of identification (photograhpic identification with proof of current address) will be required at the time of registration, for all Absentee, Telephone and Online Bidding.
Room bidding is now available, bidders are welcome to contact the auction house to pre-reserve a seat, either by telephone or via email by Friday 3rd of March, after which a confirmation email will be sent confirming seat reservation. Due to limited space we can not accommodate unreserved room bidders on the day of the auctions.
Lots will only be invoiced to the name and address on the bid registration form and cannot be transferred to another name and address. We can only accept payment for the lot from the registered Bidder.
9. Absentee Bidding
If you are unable or do not wish to bid live on the auction day, we accept absentee bids and the Saleroom & Invaluable online bidding platforms both accept absentee bids.
You will be required to declare your maximum limit, but the auctioneer will try and achieve the most inexpensive price for you subject always to the reserve price and competition from other bidders.
10. Telephone Bidding
As an alternative, there will be a telephone bidding service for the auction. Contact the auctioneer directly to book a telephone line at least 48 hours prior to the auction.
11. Buyer’s Premium and VAT
The final selling bid at auction is known as the ‘hammer price'.
For bidders who have registered for the sale directly at Graham Budd Auctions, including for Live Internet Bidding, a buyer’s premium of 24% of the hammer price will be charged.
Bidders who registered directly at the-saleroom.com will be charged a 4.95% Internet bidders’ surcharge.
Both the buyer’s premium and the internet surcharge are subject to VAT at the current rate of 20%.
An example for a lot purchased at £100 hammer for buyers who registered directly at Graham Budd Auctions, including for Live internet bidding, would be as follows:

12. VAT in respect of non-UK buyers
Buyers from outside of the UK, including EU countries, are not required to pay VAT on their purchases on condition that the goods are being shipped overseas and will not remain in the United Kingdom. Under these circumstances buyers will receive an export invoice which will not contain any VAT element.

13. Estimates
Every lot in the auction has a published low and high estimate. Estimates are published as a guide only. The final hammer price of a lot may be higher of lower than the range of figures given and there are no predetermined starting bids. The published estimates are exclusive of buyer’s premium. Every lot in the auction is subject to a reserve price which is a confidential agreement between the seller and the auctioneer. The reserve price is never set higher than the published low estimate but can be set below it.
14. Artist’s Resale Rights / Droit de Suite
This is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death.
This will be in addition to the Hammer Price, lots may qualify for and be subject to payment by the Buyer of the Artist’s Resale Right at a percentage of the Hammer Price calculated as follows:
From €1,000 to €50,000 – 4%
From €50,001 to €200,000 – 3%
From €200,001 to €350,000 – 1%
From €350,001 to €500,000 – 0.5%
Exceeding €500,001 – 0.25%
Up to a maximum levy of €10,000 on any single lot.
Any Artist’s Resale Right royalties will be calculated on the pound sterling/ Euro exchange rate quoted on the date of the auction by the European Central Bank.
15. Currency
The auction is held in the UK and will be conducted in British Pounds Sterling.
16. Payment
Payment is due in sterling and before any property can be released. The day after the auction concludes, successful buyers will be invoiced by email.
When registering for the auction you will have been required to leave credit or debit card details. Please note, although we are authorised to do so, we will not automatically charge the card after the auction as you may wish to use an alternative method or payment.
